Omschrijving

This is the first monograph on the Dutch painter, Hendrick Terbrugghen who was trained in the style of Caravaggio, translated it into Dutch, and passed on his translation to Vermeer. Though this book seeks to explain him as a link between these two great artists, its principal aim is to establish him as a delicate and most subtle artist in his own right, in the fresh, unsettled April of Dutch realism. The text includes a general survey of Terbrugghen's art; a chapter on the events of his life and the story of his eclipse until his rediscovery as an artist in the 1920's and a catalogue raisonne of his works. A section of the catalogue at the end discusses works doubtfully attributed to him, lost works known from early inventories or from surviving copies, and works wrongly attributed to him. All his known works are illustrated, including, some which have never been published. Among the 111 pages of plates there are many whole page details, and there are reproductions of works by other artists with whom he associated, by whom he was influenced, and whome he influenced.
